OUTDOOR VIDEO DRIVE-IN: OPEN SEASON
STRUTS GALLERY & FAUCET MEDIA ARTS CENTRE

A juried selection of short films and videos submitted to the festival via open call, held outdoors under the open night sky. Featured are the works of filmmakers from across Canada and the United States. The program leads off with a new music composition from Composer In Residence, Nicole Lizée.

  2600 DOLLAR MAN
Nicole Lizée 8:30 (2004)
This composition is scored for live ensemble and the Atari 2600 game console - a home video device which was released in 1977, and created a stir with its state-of-the-art graphics and sound. The 2600 Dollar Man represents the fusion of two worlds: one of fabricated explosions, lasers, radar, and alien life, combined with the human world evoked by live performers.

  WINONA
Robert Hamilton 5:45 (2008)
Time-lapse animation of a small town fair reveals social patterns: people more together in waves then splinter apart. The film is created entirely with still photography.

  ADVENTURE LAND FUN BALLOON
Crystalbeard 2:14 (2008)
A bright and somewhat non-linear cartoon exploring the fun you can have with your friends and your imagination.

  SMASH
Claire Hodge 1:41 (2008)
Stitched-together shots of hyper-choreographed Bruce Lee Kung Fu knockouts reveal the modular nature of fight footage, and the illusion-creating character of film editing.

  JELLYFISH PHILOSOPHY
Valerie LeBlanc 1:35 (2008)
This text messaging video poem is based on the hysteria induced by forces beyond individual control.

  PASSION AS FASHION
Valerie LeBlanc 0:53 (2008)
This text messaging video poem questioning the hypnotic control markets and marketing have over the lives of individuals.

  FOODIE
Allyson Mitchell 14:00 (2008)
Born into a murky world, jettisoned into fluorescence, Foodie is all emotion, all merchandise, all pressure and all pleasure.

  1 TO 8
Amy Schwartz 4:30 (2008)
A series of 30-second sequences, based on the same original frames of Super 8 mm film and reworked on an optical printer using different rhythms and methods. A play on light and colour.

  CHRONICLE RE-CONSTRUCTION
Steven Woloshen 3:00 (2008)
Filmmakers in the future will establish an archaeological approach to their subject matter. Instead of photographing images, we may have to dig them from the ground, and paste them together - film will look like today’s Dead Sea Scrolls.

THE MERRY SEA-GENTLEMAN AND THE COD-FISHER’S VOYAGE BELOW
Sam Scott 6:25 (2006)
Thrown overboard in a storm, a fisherman is rescued by a curious sea creature who leads him on an adventure below the waves. The story is told in stop-motion animation made with textiles and embroidery.

  SPLENDOR BEACH
Kate O’Connor 4:43 (2009)
Join Kate O'Connor and Ely Kim on a journey to health and well-being.
WARNING: Front row may get wet.

  SOMETHING ON FILM
Siloën Daley 6:00 (2001)
A vision from a bottle of spilt soy milk inspires a young artist to create something on film. Made with hand-processing and negative conforming, original music by Ian McGettigan of Thrush Hermit.

  THROWING ROCKS
Melanie Colosmio 1:14 (2009)
When life gives you pelicans, get them to bring you a bowling alley.

  CAPE SPEAR
William Gill 3:21 (2009)
An oddly poignant film that documents the short lifespan(s) of a series of luminous orbs that land in the ocean just off of North Americas most easterly point of land.

  GREYCON4
Brandon Blommaert 6:36 (2007)
A scientist working for a better tomorrow, through schemes and manipulations that ultimately don’t work out in his favor.

  LE CORPS HUMAIN
Alexandre Larose 4:00 (2007)
A portrait of four generations captured on a single roll of Super 8 film, edited in-camera and hand-processed.

  BOLD STORIES
Gennaro De Pasquale 15:30 (2007)
This series of short video fragments were selected and mutated from online films to create a work of visual reconstruction and narrative deconstruction.

OUTDOOR VIDEO DRIVE-IN: EVERYDAY MAGIC
PROGRAMMED BY ELISABETH BELLIVEAU
STRUTS GALLERY & FAUCET MEDIA ARTS CENTRE
The works in this screening share curious research, exploring strange worlds made and making our world strange. Building bridges between materials and the imagination, the videos transform ideas into motion - articulating a quest for hope, wonder and heartfulness. From poltergeist to mysterious animal gatherings they conjure everyday magic. Everyday Magic celebrates artists committed to independent video production. The videos showcase broad artistic approaches including super eight transfers, found footage, digital and stop motion animation. - Elisabeth Belliveau, 2009

  MY NAME IS POCHSY
Karen Hines 7:00 (2007)
Having missed some kind of mass evacuation from a mercury-packing warehouse, Pochsy is utterly alone on a ravaged industrial landscape. She thus creates her own ‘personal documentary’ as an ode to life, death, karmic reckoning and the future of the human soul.

  SUN
Kate Crocker 1:00 (2009)
The sun gets her wish; this film is created by a six-year old Yukoner.

  SATELLITE
Nelson Henricks 5:30 (2002)
The human ear. A gatherer of energy. A gatherer of sound. RPMs and BPMs. Satellites go up to the sky.

MADAME WINGER MAKES A FILM: SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Helen Hill 9:52 (2001)
Madame Winger shares Hill’s belief that the idea behind a film is more important than the technology. She describes inexpensive ways to make films, including hand processing and drawing directly onto the film.

  THREE MINUTE MIRACLE
Amalie  Atkins 12:00 (2008)
A young woman struggles to carry a giant cake through a barren winter landscape. Her wanderings eventually lead her into a imaginary world of dancing bears, a flying wolf and a magical gold tooth.

  JANUARY 15
Monique Moumblow 3:50 (2004)
“I go into the kitchen and make coffee. The poltergeist has dumped water on the floor again… It’s January 15th and it’s my birthday.”

  BEAUTY PLUS PITY
Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby 12:00 (2009)
By combining ditties, stories, cartoons, scavenged video footage and the installation of taxidermy animals, this film testifies to life's simultaneously sublime and horrific qualities, and the beauty and shame of existing.

  NOTHING EVER HAPPENED
Jessica MacCormick 10:00 (2009)
an experimental animation that illustrates a surreal internal landscape occupied by child creatures and animal imagery.

  BALD STATIC
Chad VanGaalen 12:00 (2009)
This piece uses various forms of art from screen-prints to claymation, making for an eclectic menagerie of images.

2 PM - 3 PM
KENNETH DOREN PERFORMANCE: LONG WAITING WITHOUT STARS

SACKVILLE MUSIC HALL

This performance combines a string quartet with a video of poetry readers in fractured Regency era costumes. The string quartet performs a reverse Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) composition accompanied by poetry from Sackville's enfant terrible John Thompson (1938 - 1976). This work metaphorically explores the perceived madness that encompassed both of these artists' final years by means of creating a synthesis of the two through music and text..
