OUTDOOR VIDEO DRIVE-IN
: I CAN'T HELP IT
STRUTS GALLERY & FAUCET MEDIA ARTS CENTRE

Made possible with the support of Rod Allen Co.Ltd.
Duration: 59:30
"It took me a long time to give in to the fact that I like funny things. Lately I've been learning to drop my bias that serious art is somehow more credible, and have come to understand that something that is funny or light can still be profound and can often deal with difficult subject matter in a way that is accessible. Being able to laugh at our failures and challenges can help us cope with life in a very productive way.

The works I've selected show a vulnerability in some way--either through evidence of the hand or through the characters and stories being told. These pieces reveal the awkwardness of daily drudgery through an irreverent touch, wit or lightness."
Kate O'Connor, Curator

  PUBLIC SCULPTURE
Jeremy Bailey 5:15 (2009)
In this video created at the Shargorod residency in the Ukraine, Jeremy Bailey re-imagines public sculpture as wearable sound activated fashion.

  STUPID TRICKS 3
Philippe Blanchard 5:00 (2010)
This video explores the loop as a structuring device as well as its connections to perpetual motion. Using sophisticated video compositing and visual effects techniques, these perpetually looping animations do not lead anywhere, do not produce a payoff of any kind.

  FAMILY GALAXY
Pierre Dumora & Tatiana Grigorenko 16:00 (2009)
Four people, one house, an absurd fairy tale. Four ghostly presences cross paths but never meet. Hinting at an underlying drama, they abandon themselves to their fantasies, brushing up against a certain shared insanity as if to test the limits of their own existence.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU (EDIT)
Ray Fenwick 1:30 (2009)
Using Youtube clips, this video features users Elora, j00ntje and missbeccymay singing "I Will Always Love You" as performed by Whitney Houston.

RAY FENWICK VOICE & CHARACTER DEMO REEL 2009
Ray Fenwick 2:00 (2009)
An absurd audio piece (with static video) in which a "voice actor" with a confused understanding of characterization presents his portfolio of characters.

  DO GOOD
Alison Kobayashi 10:38 (2006)
She catalogued her family’s home video collection. She came across videos of sheand her sister in Brownie and Girl Guide ceremonies. It made her want to DO GOOD. It made her want to invite others to DO GOOD too. Five Brownies created new badges. Each Brownie made a video that explained what was required to earn her badge.

  BAGDEAD
Sarah Gregg Millman 1:48
Two women whose faces are obscured by paper lunch bags have a conversation about change.

ALL WE ARE SAYING IS, WHITE GIRLS FOR KANYE, THE REVOLUTION, OR BOTH
Sarah Gregg Millman
In a video inspired by Kanye West's off-script rant during a Hurricane Katrina fundraiser, two women in sundresses jump on a bed and engage in a pillow fight.

  FIREWORKS
Jon Sasaki 2:05 (2006)
Sputtering fireworks are thrust into a gallery display case, which, while containing the danger and violence, also highlights and reveals.

  THE DESTINATION AND THE JOURNEY
Jon Sasaki 2:05 (2007)
A slightly nerve-wracking video to watch. As Sasaki embarks on a road trip he plays with our sense of danger as he pulls out a map and solely concentrates on locating his destination. The landscape zooms by and we can only hope nothing happens to the artist.

  TORONTO'S OFFICIAL Y2K MASCOT, AUTUMN, 2008
Jon Sasaki 4:33 (2008)
With "2000" emblazoned on his CN Tower-shaped body, an obsolete Y2K mascot sits contemplating his few, if any, prospects.

  ENCLOSED
Soft Turns 2:28 (2009)
The viewer is simultaneously presented with two different spaces of miniature libraries (predominantly built out of books). One witnesses the changing landscapes of book shelves and walls like a passenger, caught in an unyielding movement. The camera moves mechanically through the twin spaces, and it is up to the individual to negotiate their level of engagement, to navigate this indefinite space.

  HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT
Leslie Supnet 1:40 (2009)
Hilarious hand-drawn animated characters who debate about punk and metal. It is a charming tribute to the underground cult classic Heavy Metal Parking Lot by Jeff Krulik and John Heyn. It lends an air of childlike innocence to the original, making the time period in which the original film was shot seem quaint and old-fashioned, despite the drunken revelry and debauchery going on.

  VHS
Eli Marias 4:16 (2009)
A demented no-budget collage of found VHS tapes celebrating the glory of time and technology.

9 PM
OUTDOOR VIDEO DRIVE-IN
: 0 IN TENNIS = LOVE
STRUTS GALLERY & FAUCET MEDIA ARTS CENTRE

Made possible with the support of Rod Allen Co.Ltd.
Duration: 48:51
"At once humorous and poignant, personal and detached, this selection of short films and videos convey the complexity of often-awkward negotiations through the physical and psychological hurdles of everyday life in deceivingly simple ways. Ambitiously endearing, theses artists employ formal, structural, metaphorica, self-reflexive and conceptual strategies infused with amusing and tender results. They tell non-linear stories in states of inertia and obsessive commitment, in pursuit of brief moments of connection. All act as connective tissue between irony and empathy."
Laurel Woodcock, curator

  COUNTDOWN
Nelson Henricks :30 (2007)
System. Quantity. Price. Height. Weight. Length. Distance. Location. Duration. Volume. Intensity. Total. Rulers. Calculators. Thermometers. Telephones. Computers. Even. Odd. Year. Month. Day. Dice. Cards. Games. Unlucky. Lucky. Hour. Minute. Second.
This beautifully formal and obsessive video acts as our countdown for the evening’s screening.

NUMMER ZES: STEINWAY GRAND PIANO WAKE ME UP TO GO TO SLEEP AND ALL THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW
Guido Van der Werve 17:09 (2006)
This 35mm film tells the story of the Steinway Piano Company. In the course of the narrative, a Steinway grand piano is transported by crane from the street and an attempt is made to deliver it through the window of the artist’s tiny second floor apartment. The ensuing storyline is ambitiously endearing.

WHY ALWAYS INSTEAD OF JUST SOMETIMES (EXCERPT MATTRESS/CAT)
Deirdre Logue 3:00 (2005)
An excerpt from a series of 12 short works that record accomplishments without impact, small feats of moderate strength and moments of mild impudence. They are reflections on aging, breaking down and reparation. They are works that describe our need for intimacy and our fears of exposure. They are always, when we really wish they were just sometimes.

  CYCLE
Jon Sasaki :49 (2009)
In this nightmarish scenario, the protagonist pedals vigorously, yet advances at a disproportionately slow rate. While his efforts never flag, the mysterious force of inertia that withholds him refuses to present itself.

A WOUND DOWN WATCH COAXED TO RUN A BIT LONGER
Jon Sasaki 3:45 (2008)
The hands of an exhausted wind-up watch are coaxed into running again, although their movements no longer correspond to the actual time. Only ninety seconds separate exhaustion from absolute exhaustion.

MY PARENTS READ DREAMS I'VE HAD ABOUT THEM
Neil Goldberg 9:00 (1998)
Neil's videos are at once personal and detached, humorous and poignant. In My Parents Read Dreams I've Had About Them, Goldberg's Long Island parents recite comical and surreal transcripts handed to them by the artist from behind the camera with amusing and tender results.

  FALLING (FROM THE HUNDRED VIDEOS)
Steve Reinke 2:28
At a total length close to five hours, Reinke's series of short works is a witty, sometimes dark index of post-modern fears and desires. Openly gay, brainy yet dumb, and often irreverent. Falling features Reinke’s well-known dry, deadpan voice over, negotiating the murky terrain between mainstream television and conceptual art.

  UP
Lee Walton 1:56 (2004)
A performance for "One Block Radius", an extensive psychogeographic project created by Glowlab for the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.

ARE YOU THE FAVOURITE PERSON OF ANYBODY?
Miguel Arteta (written by Miranda July) 3:57 (2005)
Miranda July is known for her sweetly oddball films, performances and collaborative web project ‘Learning to Love You More’. Here, Miguel Arteta directs her simple yet poignant short story featuring John C. Reilly, Mike White, Miranda July and Chuy Chavez. Reilly’s character conducts a deceptively simple survey, that you inevitably find yourself taking part in.

  ACCORDION
Monique Moumblow & Yudi Sewraj 2:30 (2000)
Using an accordion as a prop, two people collaborate unneccessarily. Unless, of course, one reads it as a metaphor for the intricacies of collaboration itself.

  THE PITCH
Mark Lewis 3:59 (1998)
Beginning with a close-up of Lewis selling the idea of a film project with the only characters being extras, he directs his pitch to the camera, us the viewers. A slow zoom out reveals what we assume is a busy train station, solidifying the project in the duration of one reel of 35mm film. The Pitch is an early work by Lewis and one of the few that includes sound. Usually presented on an NTSC monitor on a simple fold out table, it references the preproduction and production modes of filmmaking.

  PETER MANSBRIDGE SINGS THE BLUES
Heath Fashina 2:19 (2003)
Peter Mansbridge Sings the Blues is a humorous critique of the mass media. Using various headlines from the CBC's The National, the work constructs a blues-like composition that exploits sound-bite culture to create a song that is catchy, yet void of detail.
