EVERYMANerism

November 14 - December 16

The pervasive influence of male behavioral patterns may be observed throughout our contemporary culture; their impact detectable in the realm of popular entertainment and the spheres of interpersonal and international conflict. The proposed project, EVERYMANerism, concerns male behavior under the influence of Ideas. Playing on the notion of intoxication, whether chemical, philosophical or political, the series explores these psychological states within the context of group identification. Focusing specifically upon identifications assumed through choice, coercion or seduction, rather than those predetermined by ethnicity or race, the 'Tribalistic' impulse will be examined as an erosion of individual initiative beneath the corporate identity of the group.

This examination, though, precludes detached objectivity as a response, instead inspiring a definitely satirical engagement. Featuring a range of representation, from the directness of editorial page caricatures to the chaotically expressive, the series will document and comment upon differing facets of the male character under the sway of doctrine. Demanding an ambitiously theatrical presentation strategy, EVERYMANerism consists of approximately one hundred drawings and paintings completed on various sizes of paper, the imagery covering approximately 1000 square feet of gallery wall space.
