Uta Riccius works out of the Enriched Bread Artists Studio in Ottawa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable studio space in a former bread factory. ShE received a degree from Concordia University in Montréal and a MFA in textiles from the Hochshule der Künste in Berlin, Germany. Her most recent project, at the Ottawa Art Gallery, involved a diverse group of artists who left inserts in local book stores and the Ottawa Art Gallery gift shop, and was part of the gallery's Off Grid program in response to the nature of urban living. She has also participated in many group ad solo exhibits across Canada and abroad.
Riccius' work usually require audience participation and will involve contact with members of the Sackville community. During her residence in June and July, she will locate and map out the short cuts people have made around Sackville. These walkways or what she terms 'desire paths', will be marked by easily identifiable concrete moulds, which are made from simple household objects or discarded material.
Riccius welcomes support from the community members in locating these paths and in creating the concrete sculptures.
In the past she has also utilized public spaces such as the islands in parking lots to display concrete casts made from recycled plastic packaging. Riccius will be holding workshops for anyone, both young and old, interested in taking part.
