Goody-B. Wiseman
Ok.Quoi?! Open Studio Artist in Residence
July 1 - August 5, 2007

A little bit of LA culture is coming to Sackville this summer. Thanks to the New Brunswick Art Board and the Canada Council for the Arts, Los Angeles artist Goody-B Wiseman will bring her talent to the Faucet Media Arts Centre and Struts Gallery for their Open Studio Artist in Residence program. Wiseman received her BFA at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and her Masters degree at the San Fransisco Art Insitute. Wiseman will arrive on July 1st and will work in our community until August 7th. The residency program will give Wiseman the opportunity to work on projects which make use of the environment and scenery the Tantamar area has to offer.

One of Wiseman’s recent projects will peak the interests of anthropology enthusiasts and art lovers alike. Pentegoet Park: The Terrible Ones is a museum-like instalment which documents the lives of a fictitious group of feral children who escape from captivity and create a colony of their own. The stories of these children raise questions about the definition of civilised behaviour, why there is an inherent tendency for a society to assimilate anything different, and the moral implications of these assimilations. Through biographies, journal entries, videos, artefacts, photos and more Wiseman brings to life “Gazelle Girl”, “Badger Boy”, “Coyote Kid” and the other feral children to create this thought provoking instalment.

Wiseman also brings to life popular album covers of the 60’s and 70’s in her film project Superlovestarpower. In this project Wiseman creates short artistic music videos which are inspired by the album covers and music of Simon and Garfunkle, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and Carole King. In essence, this project gives new meaning to the old saying “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Goody-B Wiseman uses the moment captured in the album cover and imagines the before and after to create a living narrative.

Along with working on projects while at 7 Lorne Street Goody- B Wiseman will
participate in the Ok. Quoi!? Contemporary Arts Festival. She also will facilitate a video/music workshop as part of the Creative Lab as well as other events to be announced. Goody-B Wiseman is sure to bring some creative perspectives to Sackville festivals along with her amazing artwork. For more information please call 536-1211.

Goody will also be the first artist-in-residence to use our new blog, being developed for use by artists participating in Struts & Faucet's recidencies program. This is in the very initial stages of development, and is a bit experimental, so please bear with us.

Diorama Workshop!

Saturday July 28th from 12 to 5pm Goody-B. Wiseman, Struts current Open Studio artist in residence will be hosting a workshop in producing dioramas and other small-scale environments or mis-en-scenes.
This workshop will offer instruction, ideas, and an opportunity to create your own diorama or build collaboratively with others.

The workshop is free and open to all

Dioramas can be used as sculptural narratives, non-narratives, backdrops for animations, curiosities, and when lit properly they can be photographed to produce magical illusory spaces. Some materials will be provided such as glue, sculpy, some natural materials and a base
Bring items that you think you might like to use:
small things that look like big things or
small things that look like nothing at all
medium sized things that can be manipulated to fit smaller scales.

You could also bring things like: wallpaper, grasses, hay, cotton, sticks, bark, moss, dolls, drawings, astroturf, wood paneling, cardboard boxes, stones, sand, shells, peanuts, paint, wire, chain, string, bits of fabric, sewing materials, feathers, fluff and fun stuff in general.
