RESIDENCIES :

Shayne Ehman and Seth Scriver (Vancouver & Toronto)
Open Studio artists in residence
March 15 - April 21, 2009.

Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre are pleased to announce the arrival of Shayne Ehman and Seth Scriver. These two artists will be participating in the Open Studio Artist in Residence program, which is made possible by the New Brunswick Arts Board.

During their residency in Sackville they will produce a new 10-15 minute episode of the animation 'Asphalt Watches'/ Asphalt Watches is the true story of a cross Canada hitchhiking road trip. It is a contemporary adventure tale comparable to Don Shebib's 1970 Canadian film classic, 'Goin' Down the Road'.

Be on the look out for a screening and an artist talk, and possibly even a live hitchiking performance where viewers and audience will be hidden from the traffic in some sort of bluff as they leave sackville and send remote communication to the viewers during their journey.

Seth Scriver

"Seth Scriver doesn’t limit himself to works on paper — for example, he also does hilarious animation and video — but drawing is his main preoccupation. He was strongly influenced by cartoons, comic books and especially the graffiti he saw around him growing up in downtown Toronto. He likes the “bad-assedness” of graffiti, saying it’s more edgy and in-your-face than most gallery work. He also likes the idea of “free art” — art that’s immediate and uncensored.."

The art world's newfound appreciation for drawing
By Sascha Hastings, June 22, 2005

"Seth Scriver was born and raised in downtown Toronto, Canada. He also spent some time in the country as a child being in charge of removing tomato hornworms from the family tomato patch, another of many jobs was to shoo pigeons away. Later on Seth received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2002. An interdisciplinary artist Seth works with animation, sculpture, painting, and drawing (peanutbreath.com). He is currently raisin some prunes in Toronto."

During their stay here, Seth and Shayne made quite a nest for themselves as they constructed an elaborate studio space out of found objects.
Here are some images from the early days of their stay:

They constructed an outer wall using plinths and black fabric, and installed a park bench with newspapers for sleeping on.

And here is an image of the final metamorphosis of their sudio space:
note the two TVs continually playing cartoons for inspiration, and the bean bag chair hung from a ceiling rafter as a punching bag.
