Daniel Olson

Open Studio Residency
October 4 - November 7, 2009

Daniel Olson (b. 1955) completed degrees in mathematics and architecture before
obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986 from the Nova Scotia College of Art and
Design (Halifax) and a Master of Fine Arts in 1995 from York University (Toronto).
Olson’s work – which includes sculpture, multiples, installation, photography,
performance, audio, video and artist’s books – has been exhibited widely since 1986 and
is documented in several catalogues. He is unhappy with the world, but continues to live
there for personal reasons. Olson has been seen recently in Montreal, where he is
rumoured to be working on his famous disappearing act.

"For my Open Studio residency at Struts Gallery I intend to install a ten-year anniversary
version of Private Investigation. The office installation will serve as the context or
framework for a variety of activities over the course of the residency: the definitive
video documentation of the performance components of Private Investigation; a public
performance of Private Investigation; “office hours” during which I will be available to
visitors for discussions, mini-performances, or investigations; as well as other studio
activities I might choose to undertake during my time in Sackville."
