The Bicycle Project

Regina artist Michael Flaherty has been on the road since early this summer bicycling from Victoria, British Columbia on his way to St. John’s, Newfoundland. Along the way he has stopped at a number of galleries to exhibit The Bicycle Rehabilitation Project. The project has been supported by the Saskatchewan Arts Board and by galleries along the road and now including Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre.

The crucial conceptual components of this project are the relationships being built through the activity of repairing bicycles. These are numerous: he will provide the service for free, and people will be free to use it or not; the project will create a forum on the issues represented by automobiles and mass-consumption; the sticker with which I will "sign" the repaired bicycles is a physical relationship between the rehabilitator and the participant, representing a shared opinion on the issues; a network of relationships will be formed between the rehabilitator and the viewers and among viewers who meet in the gallery or viewers who identify each other through the sticker/signature.

To celebrate Struts' 25th anniversary the Owens Art Gallery will open its premier fall exhibition featuring the work of thirty artists who have participated in the Open Studio Artist–in-Residence Program. During their residency, for one month, artists from across Canada and abroad call Sackville home, creating and interacting with the community through workshops and presentations.

The exhibition will include innovative painting, drawing, installation, and video works from a broad range of contemporary Canadian artists including: Lucy Pullen, Eric Walker, Penny McCann, Deborah Margo, Kathleen Sellars, Carl Zimmerman, Goody-B. Faucet Media Arts Centre is pleased to present an evening with animator/drawer/printmaker Paula Cowan. Paula is currently living in Sackville, teaching part time at NSCAD, though she has been based most often in London/Windsor/Guelph, Ontario where she taught at the University of Guelph and University of Western Ontario.

Paula will be screening a selection of her short animated videos which use an innovative technique combining performance, video, drawing and digital technologies. A self-described "printmaker's animator", her process though enhanced by digital techniques is firmly rooted in a tactile, paper and pencil approach.

On Saturday, Paula Cowan will facilitate a workshop at the Centre for participants interested in exploring this technique to create their own short animated video. Paula will lead participants through the various stages of her production process in a hands on, creative process.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own video cameras and/or laptops.
