Kate O'Connor
Open Studio Artist in Residence

During her time at Struts Gallery, Kate OèConnor will be working on a body of work including embroidery, drawings, and small scale paintings.

Her work examines the false sense of satisfaction we derive from material goods and domestic stability. The human desire to succeed and impress is met with situations that are on the verge of collapse based on personal goals that have not been met. The subject or object appers in the ubiquitous public or domestic setting and represents the absurdity in the importance we put on everyday routine, lifestyle, wealth and success. Her goal is to depict the loser in everyone, the dark moments that we all have when trying to function in society, the opportunity for the absurd in everyday situations and point out the very fine line between humour and tragedy.

The Famines (edmonton) & Calm Down Its Monday
concert at 7 Lorne Street

The Famines (German pop / Black Metal / Post punk)
Some of this is a lie: the Famines were founded by Raymond E. Biesinger (ex-Vertical Struts) in August 1967 and performed just once as a four-piece rock band, at Electric Garden in Covent Garden, London, before immediately breaking up in disarray. Biesinger retained the services of percussionist Garrett Heath Kruger (ex-Wolfnote) and the duo began producing eccentric, pastoral, and folk-tinged ditties steeped in Tolkienian mythology, with spiritual homages to Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran thrown into the mix for good measure.

Living is Easy Members Projects

This exhibit features a collection of recent paintings and drawings from the spring and summer of 2009. In scenes of cats, dogs, and people, Stephen’s pictures relate to the subject and context of daily life. A central unifying theme of Stephen's show is the colourful and candid combination of works on paper and canvas, providing a palpable sense of energy.

Christine Cheung (Calgary)
Open Studio Artist in Residence

During her residency, Christine will be working on a new series of paintings on canvas. Her work expresses a density of mental as well as physiacl space in contained worlds. Child-like in execution at times, the work can be seen through a lens of the artist's personal Chinese-Canadian experience but also engages in a sort of cultural navigation, both in terms of exploration of material as well as content which resists simplified interpretations.

Christine Cheung -
Open Studio Residency Exhibition

Her paintings capture a world where one's consciousness and dreams become slowly intertwined. A central theme to her work is the idea of loss and identity - who are we when we are stripped of everything? There is an encroachment of the environment upon a symbolized sense of self and the compression of time in her work. As though baring against the ground for some sort of stability, the central characters/structures in her paintings seem to strive for quietude amongst the ruckus and noise of a chaotic world full of unending choice and uncertainty.

Lisa Lipton (Halifax)
open studio artist in residence

"The Baseball Project" will be a highly theatrical event and video that conjures the idea of another realm - a place where ideas of social and /or sporting conduct are made absurd - through the use of dance as well as peculiar costumes and masks. Local Sackville residents are invited to perform in the video ( a night time baseball scene) with each performer wearing a pale blue knitted costume. The video and the knitted baseball costumes will be on display in a larger installation at the end of the residency.
