Workshop participants will prepare and perform experimental works from the 20th century, such as John White's Drinking and Hooting Machine, at the Motion Ensemble concerts on Wednesday and Saturday of the festival. By studying and performing these works, workshop participants will begin to find inspiration for the creation of their own new works. Open Studio time will be available throughout the week with Martin Arnold.

10AM How to write a Honk Symphony

These two gentlemen will inspire participants to create scores for the Honk Symphony to be performed on Friday, August 3rd. This annual event calls on volunteers to form an orchestra of car horns and other noisemakers to perform pieces scored by the workshop participants. No musical writing skills necessary -just bring your ears and a sense of timing.

Open Studio Artist in Residence Goody B. Wiseman will lead participants through this video making workshop. Goody will present a brief history of the various ways music and video have collided in contemporary art including the current fascination with popular music. Participants will then begin working on a video project employing music and various narrative strategies. Open studio and editing time will be available throughout the week for this collaborative workshop.

This workshop explores the relationships and influences between audio, installation, its material and dematerialized subject matter. This session will involve the use of recording devices, audio editing programs enhancing sensitivities to sound and the environment as well as spatial perception. Open studio time will be available throughout the week for this collaborative workshop.
5PM Motion Ensemble Concert

Motion is delighted to welcome Martin Arnold, who will be OK.Quoi's Composer In Residence for the week. Martin is a Toronto-based composer and improviser, a member of Marmots and the "fulcrum" of Rat-Drifting music collective. Motion will also celebrate the Chinese Year of the Pig by performing works by Asian composers featuring works by Tony Leung (Woven Threads and M1R4H8). Finally the concert will include a work by NYC composer Elliott Sharpe, and a performance of the late great Canadian/US composer James Tenney's Critical Band.
7PM: Live Interactive Improv Performances hosted by W.L. Altman

10AM: Les Moineaux d’Entendre
Sackville United Church
Nadia Francavilla and D'Arcy Philip Gray from Motion Ensemble will introduce participants to 60's style performance art. A brief history and description of Fluxus will be followed by a workshop/coaching of selected "classics" of the genre. A short concert will finish the morning. Workshop participants will perform pieces by composers such as Yoko Ono, Bengt af Klintberg and others in public places around town while exploring such heady questions like "what is art?" and "why??" No answers are guaranteed.
12PM The Little Beauty Tour 2007 - Alexandra Flood + Darren Emenau
Parked out front of the Struts will be a customized bowler trailer featuring a 20 Year RATrospective of rat paintings by Alexandra Flood . Meanwhile Darren Emenau will be turning experimental forms on a kick wheel using bone china and silica chunks locally dug in Central Greenwich NB.

1PM Drawing Sound Workshop

The Owens Art Gallery / Marjorie Young Bell Conservatory of Music
This workshop is open to everyone, children, Creative Lab participants and the general public interested in either making art or music. Martin Arnold and Motion Ensemble will lead a workshop in musical improv. Beginning with exercises and “tasks”, workshop participants will learn to express and collaborate in this liberating form of musical expression.
At the same time, artists aged 5 and up will be painting and drawing. What colour is that sound? What sort of line does that rhythm make? Come and explore art and music in this hands-on afternoon of drawing sound.
The workshop begins at 1pm at the Owens Art Gallery, then participants will walk down to the Marjorie Yound Bell Conservatory at Mount Allison University at 1:30pm.

Four voices, one singer, and a bit of tech. This vocal quartet for one live singer and three recorded voices, inspired by Julius Caesar and the Brutus world, reflects the complicated anxiety of being picked before our time, or being a prick during your time!

Two fabulous programs of international short film and video selected by Andrea Dorfman and Tamara Henderson with works by Jackie Torrens, Anne Troake, Jamie Travis, John Ayala, Sook-Yin Lee,Renata Mohamed, Lisa Morse, Nick And Shila Pye, Robert Kennedy, Helen Hill, Micheal Eddy, Jon Knowles and Robert Knowles, Hannah Hillebrandt, Matthew Lutz Kinoy, Claus Rasmussen, Elisabth Jugert and Maria Loboda, Michele Dimenna, Sean Lynch. Evan Quigley, Sarah Bennett, Mikio Sato and Youngho Lee, Ilya Kampilari, Hank Schmidt in der Beek, John Bell and Isabelle Fein will be screened outside under the stars. The collective will take an afternoon jaunt to the coast to perform a short concert of new contemporary music.

Our 4th annual take on this fabulous community event will kick off the second Sappy Records Music Festival. Saturday's program will include more music in honour of the Year of the Pig. Works by Alice Ho and Tan Dun as well as a large scale work Loose Warp by Martin Arnold, which will be performed by Motion Ensemble and OK.Quoi?! workshop participants. The concert will also feature the premiere of Sackville composer James Code's Study in Nothingness.
