WORKSHOPS
OK.Quoi?! is an interdisciplinary festival of contemporary art, focusing on video, audio, new and independent music. The festival is produced by Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre in partnership with Motion Ensemble, Sappy Records and CHMA 106.9 FM. The works of over 40 artists will be presented over 6 days in a variety of screenings, concerts, broadcasts and on the world wide web. Alongside exciting international and national work, OK.Quoi?! features new and innovative projects from local and regional artists including a series of Creative Lab workshops.
Calling for participants to join in the OK. Quoi?! Creative Lab workshops. Designed to encourage a concentrated studio group, the Creative Lab will join participants with the OK.Quoi?! visiting artists Martin Arnold, D’Arcy P. Gray, W.L. Altman, Goody B. Wiseman, and Kenneth Doren.
The OK.Quoi?! artists will host workshops in music composition, acoustic and electronic, video production, audio installation and performance. Working with the resident artists and studio facilitator Leah Garnett, participants will spend the week creating works which will be presented throughout the festival.
Participants may sign up for all of the workshops or individual workshops.
$125 for the week/ $100 for students
$75 for the week if you register before July 13th.
OR $25 per individual creative lab/$20 for students
The cost for each workshop includes instruction, technical support, the use of the space and facilities at Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre and the Sackville Music Hall.

Experimental Music Workshop
facilitated by Martin Arnold
Workshop participants will prepare and perform experimental works from the 20th century such as John White’s Drinking and Hooting Machine. The works will be performed at the Motion Ensemble concerts on Wednesday and Saturday of the festival. By studying and performing these works, workshop participants will begin to find inspiration for the creation of their own new works. Open Studio time will be available throughout the week with Martin Arnold.
TUESDAY JULY 31

How to write a Honk Symphony
facilitated by D’Arcy P. Gray and WL Altman
These two gentlemen will inspire participants to create scores for the Honk Symphony to be performed on Friday August 3rd. This annual event calls on volunteers to form an orchestra of car horns and other noisemakers to perform pieces scored by the workshop participants. No musical writing skills necessary –just bring your ears and a sense of timing.

Ceci N'est Pas un Music Video
facilitated by Goody B.Wiseman
Struts Open Studio Artist in Residence Goody B. Wiseman will lead participants through this video making workshop. Goody will present a brief history of the various ways music and video have collided in contemporary art including the current fascination with popular music. Participants will then begin working on a video project employing music and various narrative strategies. Open studio and editing time will be available throughout the week for this collaborative workshop.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 1

Audio for Installation
facilitated Kenneth Doren
Working with audio editing software, creating and thinking about sound in artificial surroundings. This workshop explores situated sound; the relationships and influences between audio, installation, its material and dematerialized subject matter. This session will involve the use of recording devices, audio editing programs to enhance sensitivities to sound and the environment as well as spatial perception. Open studio time will be available throughout the week for this collaborative workshop.
THURSDAY AUGUST 2

Performance Art: There’s a Fluxus A’Muxus
facilitated by D’Arcy P. Gray and Nadia Francavilla
Les Moineaux d’Entendre (Nadia Francavilla and D'Arcy Philip Gray from Motion Ensemble) will introduce participants to 60's style performance art. A brief history and description of Fluxus will be followed by a workshop/coaching of selected "classics" of the genre. A short concert will finish the morning. Workshop participants will perform pieces by composers such as Yoko Ono, Bengt af Klintberg and others in public places around the city while exploring such heady questions like "what is art?" and "why??" No answers are guaranteed.

Drawing Sound Workshop
facilitated by Lucy MacDonald + Motion Ensemble
This workshop is open to everyone, children, Creative Lab participants and the general public interested in either making art or music. Martin Arnold and Motion Ensemble will facilitate a workshop in musical improv. Beginning with exercises and “tasks”, workshop participants will learn to express and collaborate in this liberating form of musical expression.
At the same time, artists aged 5 and up will be painting and drawing. What colour is that sound? What sort of line does that rhythm make? Come explore art and music in this hands-on afternoon of drawing sound.

Part 2 Experimental Music Workshop

Develop your composition during the second half of the experimental music workshop facilitated by Composer in Residence Martin Arnold.
KIDS CORNER POWER JAM
The Kids Corner Power Jam promises to be a fun filled week with professional musicians, artists and friends alike! Learn the skills of song writing, recording, and performing as well as making your own instrument, band shirt, show poster, and album art alongside the activities and events of 2007’s Ok. Quoi?! Contemporary Arts Festival and the Sappy Records Music Festival.
If you are between the ages of 6 to 12 and have always enjoyed music now is your chance to shine. Even if you’ve been playing music since you can remember, never picked up an instrument, or have those masterpieces that you play over and over again alone in your room. The Kids Corner Power Jam welcomes all levels of talent, interest, or those just wanting to have a goodtime.

The introductory workshop for the childrens program will have the participants making posters and t-shirts with artists and musicians

10AM- NOON Making Instruments - Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre
Using household and readymade objects, participants will learn how to make a variety of acoustic instruments and noisemakers.
