During her residency at Struts & Faucet, Myriam Jacob-Allard envisions deconstructing the “Mother” archetype by exploring the already existing space between the myth of the “The Good Mother” and the daily realities of motherhood. In this collaborative workshop we will learn to make flashing light boxes made from cardboard.
Each participant will assemble a light box with text based on a phrase or word that illustrates, in their own perception, an aspect of their mother’s day-to-day imperfections. In this regard, the stated shortcomings will demonstrate more globally the kinds of expectations we each have for our mothers.
Using a DIY approach, the light boxes will be assembled with a variety of accessible materials: cardboard boxes, duct tape, plexiglass and black paint. Participants will then install the light boxes on the wall at Struts & Faucet for the duration of Jacob-Allard’s residency. Certain characteristics such as the style of writing, box size and language will help to define the individuality of each light box that is installed on the wall. By means of flashing lights, these multiple perceptions will interact with each other while creating irregular rhythms. The dialogue between the different quotes will provoke poignant combinations and narratives between these interrupted messages while putting forward the disparate discourses that focus on mothers. At the end of the residency in December you will be able to take your light box home with you!
