Kaeli Cook
Sackville based artist Kaeli Cook is a lover of everyday objects (the mug no one else is allowed to use, the pair of knitted socks that are warm until holes form), and is interested in opposing ideas of preservation, destruction, durability and fragility. Transmutations of Lineages is representative of her lineage; of the textile makers and gardeners extending back through multiple generations of family. The work explores family heirlooms through the act of casting textiles and flowers in clay. Precious objects at risk of natural decomposition are preserved and protected, while also becoming more fragile. Kaeli’s latest project was a replica of a blanket made by her great aunt Marion, who passed away 2 years ago.
“My desire with this project is to celebrate the labour and honor the work of the women who have passed these skills down to me; I plan to literally and figuratively take up these threads to make them my own; to translate textiles and flowers into pottery.”
