Thursdays at 5:30 pm
May 23 – June 22
at Struts Gallery (or just outside of it)
On Friday, June 23rd, Struts will screen MONITOR 15, a film program presented by South Asian Visual Arts Centre (SAVAC) that showcases 7 experimental short films and videos. These films initiate dialogue around the shifting nature of politics, economies, and landscapes across the Global South and its diasporas. For the month leading up to the screening, you are invited to participate in a reading and discussion group that aims to provide context for these films.
About the readings
In an effort to steward understanding and inquiry into the sometimes intimidating world of experimental film, the staff at SAVAC (who will also be visiting Sackville for the screening!) have generously assembled a collection of 5 texts. In their opening address to readers, they write: “Here is a collection of writings that offer reflections on how racialized or diasporic artists are situating themselves in the contemporary world. For us at SAVAC, these texts provide clearings for perceiving how our artists are responding to their realities. Both experimental film and diasporic artistic methodologies sometimes favour presenting images and sounds in poetic, durational, and seemingly fragmented ways. These strategies come out of and sometimes mirror aspects of artists’ existence—at the individual and collective level—that evade easy definition.”
About the reading and discussion group
Every Thursday from May 25 to June 22, community members will gather at Struts to discuss a new text. Texts range from 5–17 pages. To access the readings, participate in the discussion group, or if you have any questions about the initiative, please email admin@strutsgallery.ca with subject line MONITOR 15 Readings. You do not have to participate in the discussion group to access the readings.
