Struts Gallery is seeking proposals for the Struts Gallery Video Artist in Residence Program, a new paid artist residency opportunity for emerging artists looking to create a new video artwork. This position is funded by the Government of Canada through the Digital Skills for Youth Program.

From September 26th to December 17th, the artist in residence will have access to a small workspace and free access to all Struts’ equipment and facilities upon request. This includes our editing suites, professional cameras and audio gear, and industry-level software. Please reach out to lucas@strutsgallery.ca for inquiries about all our available equipment and facilities or check out our equipment list and our facilities pages on our website.

The artist in residence will use self-direct studio time to learn new video recording and editing skills, working towards the creation of a new work. The artist in residence will meet once every two weeks with a mentor to discuss their ongoing project and troubleshoot any potential issues.

The successful applicant will be mentored by Production Manager and video artist Lucas Morneau. The ability to work independently and in a collaborative group environment is required. Candidates should be able to set their own goals and deadlines and ask for feedback and support when needed.

It is not required that the successful applicant have experience in video art but should feel comfortable with the basics of computer literacy. Familiarity with Mac environments as well as having some experience using either Adobe suite, DaVinci Resolve, and/or Final Cut Pro would be an asset. The artist in residence must be a post-secondary graduate (diploma, bachelor's degree, master's degree, etc.), ideally from a related fine arts or tech program.

Struts Gallery is an equal opportunity employer, and we strongly encourage and will prioritize applications from equity-seeking groups. We welcome applicants to self-identify themselves when applying as BIPOC, applicants with disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+, and/or are from any other community they identify with.

Please note: Accommodations are not provided.

Interested applicants should submit the following:

  • a CV or Resume detailing relevant work experience (3 pages max)

  • a cover letter outlining your project idea and prior experience. (500 words max)

  • 5 - 10 images max and/or under 3 minutes of video representing your current artistic practice

Email applications to lucas@strutsgallery.ca. Applications and any questions can be directed to Lucas Morneau, Production Manager.

All applicants will receive a confirmation email indicating receipt of application. If you do not receive a response within five business days, please contact 506-536-1211.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship;

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (either a citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee status - work permits are not eligible);

  • Self-identify as underemployed (i.e. employed below their level of education, holding part-time employment, or in emerging fields with few jobs);

  • Have completed post-secondary studies (exception: interns located in Nunavut, Yukon or NWT are not required to meet this criterion);

  • Have no immediate family relationship with the employer.

NOTES ON ACCESS:

Our main door on Lorne Street is on the first floor, with a ramp leading to the entrance with a small lip. We have one washroom on the first floor that is gender neutral. We welcome guide dogs and other service animals. There are no washrooms in the building that are wheelchair accessible, have safety grab bars or supports at this time. The nearest accessible washroom is at The Painted Pony about 500m away on Bridge Street. Our second floor, which houses our editing suites, is also not wheelchair accessible. We sincerely apologize for these barriers. A mobile Mac Studio with a UHD monitor is available for editing purposes.

Thank you to the Government of Canada for funding this residency opportunity.
